Course Overview

The Pre-Master-s for Tourism and Hospitality Management provides postgraduate students with the essential subject related knowledge and skills they will need to succeed in a tourism or hospitality related master-s course at Bournemouth University. The course is academically challenging and builds on your prior studies and experience. It provides advanced learning and English language training, allowing you to use critical evaluation and analysis skills. You will cover key academic skills (including research, writing, presentation and analysis), and subject-specific modules (including core subjects in your area of study, and specialised modules that are central to your chosen postgraduate degree course). Course components: 1. Explain the theories of strategic management and critically analyse and apply these theories in response to strategic problems. 2. Analyse the external structural environment in which organisations operate and explain how it drives strategy formulation. 3. Accurately define the key definitions of the major elements within the tourism and hospitality industries and demonstrate an understanding of main motivational imperatives underlying the industry. 4. Demonstrate a clear awareness of external forces impacting on the tourism and hospitality industries including economic pressures, social and cultural changes, and also environmental, ecological and ethical concerns. 5. Analyse the current scale, scope and diversity of the hospitality industry and identify some of the structural differences between hospitality organisations. 6. Report on findings from primary research and demonstrate an ability to reflect on the process by identifying flaws and limitations in the process, and propose recommendations for further research7. Define researchable problems and formulate questions and hypotheses. 8. Produce a research proposal demonstrating an understanding of both qualitative and quantitative research methods, and an awareness of ethical issues and good practice in social science research. 9. Demonstrate an ability to critique social scientific research by determining whether or not research is objective, logical, valid, reliable and based on sound rationale. 10. Develop insight into the process of strategic leadership and the management of strategic change. 11. Write a literature review of the research area, as part of an overall research report which will also include an introduction, conclusion and research methodology, using appropriate specified academic in-text referencing techniques and bibliography.
