Course Overview

Designed for future financial leaders who want to make an impact in the complex global economy, the Master of Finance program — known as MFin — may be completed in 12 or 18 months. The program builds upon MIT's unique legacy of academic leadership in the field of finance, combining its heritage with the latest in innovation, theory, and practice.

Launched in direct response to a demand in the industry for principled financial experts, our Master of Finance program combines in-depth study of quantitative techniques with practical, hands-on business problem solving. The program prepares students for a broad range of financial careers—careers requiring analytical rigor and creative thinking to address market challenges.

WHAT IS MFIN?

The Master of Finance program is designed to teach you how to use advanced mathematical models and quantitative methods to find answers to complex finance problems.

Building on the foundation of MIT Sloan’s powerful finance legacy, the MFin program offers its students an unprecedented combination of heritage, resources, rigor, and relevance, enabling them to become leaders who will shape the industry.

MFin graduates find careers in asset management, hedge funds, consulting firms, insurance companies, investment and corporate banks, brokerage firms, financial data providers, venture capital, ratings firms, and treasury and finance departments in governments and major corporations.

MFIN FACULTY

Many leaders in the field consider MIT Sloan the birthplace of modern finance. Pioneers like Fischer Black, John Cox, and Stewart C. Myers, as well as Nobel Laureates Paul Samuelson, Robert C. Merton, Myron Scholes, and Franco Modigliani, all have roots in the MIT Sloan Finance Group, a major force of change in the industry.

Formed long before other business schools recognized finance as a distinct field of study, the MIT Finance Group is responsible for many of the research breakthroughs that have shaped finance theory and practice over the last 40 years—and continue to do so today:

  • The Black-Scholes-Merton derivative-pricing model.
  • The Modigliani-Miller theorems on corporate financing and evaluation.
  • The Cox-Ingersoll-Ross model of the term structure of interest rates.

MIT Sloan finance faculty are advancing the field of financial economics while generating innovations and leading-edge management practices critical for leadership in today’s complex global economy. MFin students have access to their latest research.
