Course Overview
The MSc degree qualifies for entry to European doctoral programmes, and also for a variety of other careers. Heidelberg is famous for its concentration of world-class biological research laboratories, many of which are open to students on our MSc course. The Major Molecular and Cellular Biology (MCB) is ideal for students who want a career in biological or biomedical research. With over 50 staff, many of whom also teach in other majors, we offer a huge range of practicals and laboratory placements and a uniquely broad spectrum of research topics and state-of-the art techniques. Our staff are spread not just over four University research centres, but also at EMBL, the German Cancer Centre (DKFZ) and a Max-Planck Institute. Modern biology deals with questions of the complex world of living structures and their interactions with the environment. The organization and the dynamics of the biosphere and the structure and function of its parts are the object of consideration. These include plants, animals and micro-organisms, their structure and way of life, their diseases and defects as well as their healing. It is based on the examination of cells as the smallest unit of all living beings with the methods of molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry and physics and bioinformatics.
