This course aims to produce graduates who are independent, innovative, and creative thinkers who can competently undertake a range of tasks relevant to a career in museum work. Whether you want to work with objects and collections, manage a museum or heritage place, or protect and interpret significant sites, landscapes or intangible cultural heritage, a postgraduate qualification in cultural heritage and museum studies provides a pathway into employment in the diverse and exciting heritage sector.
Our courses will equip you with the knowledge, conceptual understanding, research and practical skills to make a difference. They are developed and taught by dedicated staff who have both high level professional experience and are internationally recognised in their research areas. Our graduates have gone on to become leaders in the profession, working as practitioners in museums, galleries, heritage institutions, government and community organisations and in private practice. The international content of our course enables our graduates to work throughout Australia and overseas.
We offer a variety of programs in Cultural Heritage and Museum Studies, from Graduate Certificates, through to Masters. These courses are flexible and offered in a variety of modes including full time or part time, on or off campus, and with three intakes per year. Practical experience is a key theme of the program and you will have the opportunity to incorporate internships and international field schools within your course, and to participate in visits to museums, galleries and heritage places as part of the on campus programs. Our specialist teaching staff reflect the interdisciplinary nature of heritage practice, and each member has significant industry experience.
Over the past 30 years, the Cultural Heritage Centre for Asia and the Pacific at Deakin University has developed an international reputation for excellence in teaching and research. We encourage students to develop their professional skills and networks during their studies, and have a dedicated online 'Cultural Heritage & Museum Studies Hub' to share news and opportunities.
