Course Overview

The DClinDent in Prosthodontics is full-time programme which will allow the candidate to achieve specialist-level training in orthodontics, together with a taught professional Doctorate, and will also prepare them for the Speciality Membership Examinations of one of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of the UK.

The DClinDent aims to provide doctoral level educational opportunities to enable students to develop, consolidate and enhance their range of academic and clinical competencies to enable independent and reflective practice at the standard of a specialist in each clinical discipline.

On completion of the DClinDent, the student will be able to demonstrate the following:

  1. Apply and demonstrate critical prosthodontic knowledge and skills beyond that gained from undergraduate and fundamental dental education and training.
  2. Become self-sufficient in the application of prosthodontics (including fundamental endodontics, periodontics and interdisciplinary approaches) to follow a career within the discipline.
  3. Demonstrate autonomy in the application of research and evidence based dentistry to support clinical activity.
  4. Demonstrate patient management to the standard of a specialist (including laboratory work, interdisciplinary planning and administration).

Program Outline

The programme addresses five components:

  1. the scientific basis of prosthodontic care
  2. the relationship of other dental disciplines to prosthodontic care
  3. diagnosis and treatment planning for patients with advanced prosthodontics problems
  4. the clinical treatment of patients with advanced prosthodontic problems
  5. clinical treatment involving combined prosthodontic and other dental therapy

For Year 1 and Year 2 students, there will be a written exam at the end of each semester.

In addition to the above, at the end of Year 2, students will also have oral exams.

Successful completion of the first two years of the programme will allow students to proceed to Year 3 of the programme. In Year 3, students will present the following:

a) a clinical governance project b) a systematic review of a topic related to orthodontics c) two fully documented patient case presentations d) two unseen (diagnostic) cases will also form part of this examination
