Course Overview

This exciting multi-disciplinary programme includes contributions from economics, political science, development planning, engineering and the natural sciences, as appropriate for understanding planetary boundaries, people and the resource nexus.

Why should I study this degree at UCL? The UCL Institute of Sustainable Resources (ISR) is a leading international centre for research into resources and their wider impacts on society, including economics, environmental impacts, policy and law. The curriculum fully reflects the global nature of the subject. You will gain in-depth expertise at the intersection of the environmental, social and economic aspects of sustainable resources, from both public policy and industrial perspectives. You will learn to use a range of tools and methodologies for sustainable resource management and will have the opportunity to apply these in your dissertation. You will learn key employment skills as an integral part of the programme, including report writing, group and individual presentation, decision-making under uncertainty, intercultural communication and the business context.

Regular seminars are held across UCL and there are opportunities for you to undertake industry-focused dissertation projects. UCL has a vibrant, international student community and this diversity is reflected in this programme, where the range of backgrounds and experiences of both staff and students offers a unique learning environment.

The overnight fieldtrip in the first term will offer you a valuable opportunity to meet fellow students and staff. Your career The sustainable extraction, supply, use and disposal (or re-use) of natural resources has become increasingly important to business, policymakers, and civil society around the world. You will be equipped to become a leader and entrepreneur in your chosen area of specialisation, whether in terms of policy making, the business management of resource sustainability issues or the wider implications of resource exploitation.

The skills that you will acquire will make you a strong applicant for employment in a wide range of sectors including business, national and local government, NGOs and global organisations concerned with economy-resource-environment interactions. The programme includes a careers event with speakers from a variety of organisations, providing an opportunity for you to meet potential employers. You will become a member of the MSc Sustainable Resources alumni network and will be invited to attend alumni events and benefit from networking opportunities with fellow students.

Structure

The MSc Sustainable Resources: Economics, Policy and Transitions is a 180-credit programme consisting of:

  • 5 core modules (75 credits)
  • a choice of 3 optional modules (45 credits)
  • a dissertation project (60 credits)

The compulsory modules provide a comprehensive overview, while the optional modules provide more specific skills in areas that you have a special interest in.

The programme includes lectures, interactive seminars and presentations from visiting speakers from national government, international organisations, businesses and charities.
